When you play Victoria‘s impressive Metropolitan golf course the first thing you notice is the first-class conditioning. It’s as if any serious professional golf tournament could be held here on any day of the year. Hosting seven Australian Open’s there is no doubt that this layout is a serious test for any golfer.

From the tees you are faced narrow-ish fairways lined with denser vegetation than other Melbourne sandbelt courses, and large, strategic fairway bunkering. The green complexes are also masterly designed and feature large, undulating putting surfaces that are delightfully bordered by more dramatic bunkers. However the key to play Metropolitan well is to position your ball on the correct portion of the fairway to give yourself every chance to land an approach shot near to the pin.

With many to choose from, especially on the front nine, GolfAway’s signature hole at Metropolitan golf course is the 319 metre par four 16th. This brilliant short par four has a severe dog-leg to the right. The inside corner of the dog-leg is guarded by deep, penalising bunkers. Driver from the tee is fraught with danger but the reward is immense. This beautiful hole has one of the smaller, but still generously sized, greens that is fiercely guarded on four sides by bunkers. Leaving yourself a longer approach shot here will give you the spin you need to stay close to the pin.
