To play golf at the world renowned Royal Melbourne 36 hole golfing layout is to experience the extraordinary. Located in the remarkably well draining area of Melbourne’s Sandbelt district the inspiring course design and jaw dropping features of both the East Course and the West Course are eternally memorable. Most televised championship golf is played on a combination of East and West course holes to form the renowned Composite Course.
With large, prominent bunkering and enormous undulating and fast greens the Royal Melbourne golf course’s most unforgettable feature is that the edge of some putting surfaces drop off directly into bunkers. The courses are both very playable for most golfers with many risk verses reward type tee shots. However correct placement on the fairway will give the best angle of approach to most greens.
While almost every hole is worthy, GolfAway’s choice of signature hole at Royal Melbourne golf course is the 161 metre par three 5th on the West Course. From first arrival this hole is simply spectacular and seamlessly blends into the natural surrounds like it’s always been there. Viewing from the tee you can see down over a shallow valley and up to an invitingly large, oval shaped green. Flanked on both sides by distinctive Royal Melbourne bunkering it’s best to leave your tee shot just short of the pin as downhill putts on these fast greens can be perilous.
